During his PhD studies, he made a significant contribution to the description of a novel pathway in Transplantation Immunology (the semi-direct pathway of allorecognition). He subsequently underwent further medical training at the Royal London Hospital and Barts Hospital, and he obtained his MRCP (UK) in London in 2007.Marrying a Singaporean, he relocated to Singapore in 2008 and continued his specialist training in Nephrology at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH), which was completed in 2011; then, he started working as a consultant nephrologist with subspecialty in kidney transplantation until 2017.During his service in SGH, he successfully obtained a few institutional research grants, and participated in numerous research projects related to the immune mechanisms underlying kidney transplant rejection and glomerulonephritis, as well as on the discovery of novel biomarkers. He has several international publications. He has also been invited for several oral presentations in the UK, Mexico, Switzerland, Malaysia, Spain and Singapore. After working for 10 years at the SGH, he opened his own private practice in April 2018 “Francisco Kidney & Medical Centre” at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital; focusing on medical and holistic care of kidney disease, kidney transplantation and dialysis, as well as kidney-related conditions like type 2 diabetes. He also worked as a visiting consultant for the “National Kidney Foundation Singapore” for almost a year in 2018. In June 2019, he took an interim position as Medical Director of a new private dialysis centre chain, “Davita Singapore”; working 11 months with them, helping them in the process to open 3 new dialysis centres from scratch and adjusting their protocols to the local setting. In May 2020, Dr Francisco opened his second company “OLYMPIA Lifestyle by Dr Francisco”, offering holistic health enhancement, weight loss and functional fitness programmes and services; aiming for health promotion, disease prevention and minimisation of disease complications. Dr Francisco acquired vast teaching experience and was in charge of immunology-related topics, renal transplantation, renal histopathology and evidence-based medicine at the SGH. He was also an active moderator of research meetings and guided juniors in the study design of their own projects. Recently, he has focused his academic efforts on patient education, giving some health talks to the community and being active and live on Facebook with interactive Video Blogs and in his YouTube channels. He recently has published an ebook on diet and another in kidney health and disease; which have been welcomed as insightful and useful by the community and peer professionals. To Dr Francisco, the quality of care as well as patient’s experience and satisfaction are of outmost importance, where a sincere and empathic approach to patient’s care has been his guiding principle, and patient’s interests have been his top priority.
